The last few weeks have been busy. As you probably noticed, I have been sharing a lot of informative videos the last couple of weeks. So now that I have time to catch a breath, I wanted to go a little deeper with some highlights and holistic insights for you.
Highlights from Birth Storytelling Live with Philippa Scott
This birth story was interesting for me because it was the first time I had heard a mother share her freebirth story – a birth story that happened at home without medical assistance.
It was inspirational to hear Philippa’s birth story and how she transformed. She experienced two traumatic births in the hospital and then decided to have a freebirth, even though, she didn’t have too much support from her husband. No matter what, she was having her baby on her own terms.
If you missed the replay on Instagram, watch it here.
Some important points from the video for future moms:
A freebirth is not the same as a wild birth. Even though freebirths are without medical assistance, that doesn’t mean you are going through the process alone. You can still hire doulas to support you in pregnancy, birth, and/or postpartum and you can still work with a midwife during pregnancy and postpartum to check on you and your baby’s health and progress, as Philippa did. Philippa purposefully decided on a freebirth, not a wild birth.
Prepare for your freebirth. Philippa did a lot of preparation before this birth. Even though she had already delivered two children, she still needed to do inner work such as visualizations, emotional and trauma healing, and to learn to connect more to her body. She also knew that she would require a doula for herself and for her two young children. Philippa mentioned that freebirths have become trendier but that it’s important to be responsible and to know how to do baby CPR and to have a plan B in case of emergency.
Mothers that trust their intuition and follow it have better birth experiences. Even though her husband was not very supportive about the freebirth until after he had witnessed it, she knew that this was how she wanted to birth her baby. She was so glad that she trusted her intuition and had this empowered freebirth. In her fourth and final birth, she trusted her intuition again and decided not to have a freebirth but to hire a male midwife and that decision proved to be wise too because she did have some complications at birth; she needed the extra help in that birth.
Mothers who trust their instincts and act have better births. During her freebirth, her baby was posterior. In previous births, her labor was stalled with her babies in a posterior position; she was given artificial oxytocin to “speed up labor” – which led to an emergency caesarean for her first birth. However, in this birth, she trusted her instincts which told her to move. Her baby needed movement to move down the birth canal. Her body knew how to move and when she did, she delivered the baby without issues.
Women who spend time healing from previous traumatic births or from other traumas before giving birth have better birth experiences. It’s not true that once something is passed that it no longer affects us. The body keeps score. The body and the mind remember, and this can affect subsequent births. Some women may be aware of their triggers and traumas but not know where to turn for healing or what type of healing is best for them or they may run out of time during pregnancy to focus on it before the birth comes.
